Not such a great modern sci-fi classic after all
This movie was such a bore.

The entire movie moved at such a snail's pace and that contributed to my dislike of it. As a newcomer (with no prior knowledge of anything about the franchise) the story and characters didn't feel particularly interesting or engaging.

The story was like bad Star Wars fanfiction that didn't exactly suck me in with any plot points whatsoever. The first half especially felt kinda like the prequels, but without the funny quotes that have become legendary and the narm charm. The attack on arrakis towards the second half proved that this movie only believed in excitement when it felt like it. This was of course the moment I finally realized this movie really wasn't for me.

The second half was pretty much just a long trek through the desert with the only the sandworm and fremen encounters to hopefully excite you. By the time it was over I was disappointed, but glad that this waste of two hours was over.

The main character was also a bore and probably the most bland main character I've seen in any media ever. I had no problem with him being a "dark messiah" or whatever, but his sucky personality and the structure of the movie made me uninterested in his "character arc." The supporting characters were...better, but not enough to really save this movie for me.

Other things that annoyed were that this movie was too bothered with looking extremely visually "impressive" (I've seen better) and focusing on MAINLY using those visuals to tell most of the story rather than actually good dialogue to complement that.

Also with this movie having arthouse sensibilities it made me realize why the movie felt so meh to me overall. The film was quite literally an incredibly boring arthouse movie very poorly disguised as a mediocre "sci-fi action epic" to disguise its further mediocre-ness (which didn't work on me)

Thus is one of the kinds of movies where I don't agree with the critics or audience in how the movie is rated because everything about this movie feels overrated and overhyped. That being said Icm happy for everyone who could find interest in this movie that I really really really could not,

One hour in and it's been talking, talking and more talking
I am falling asleep. This movie has taken AN HOUR to establish 3 things:

There are 3 factions; 1 good, 1 bad and one neutral caught between them.

The good guys leave their home, to come to the neutral world and oversee something called "spice" (which is really, really important).

    The protagonist is The One.

That's it. How long did that take you to read? 20 seconds?

On top of all this, the movie also had to start with HEAVY narration.

    It's been exposition-scene, after exposition-scene, after exposition-scene. There was a single fencing-training scene.

    It's Boring, with a capital B!

I'm sure it gets better now that they are FINALLY leaving to see the spice, but goddamn, I am all for character development, world building and plot, but this is so uneventful and it just drags on and on.
