Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday

Set over a day in 1924, the story follows Jane Fairchild, a maid in the Niven household, who has the day off to celebrate Mothering Sunday while Mr. and Mrs. Niven attend a lunch to celebrate the engagement of their neighbour’s only remaining son, Paul, to Emma Hobday. Jane rejoices at her freedom on an unseasonably hot, beautiful spring day. But, she has no mother to go to. For almost seven years she has – joyfully and without shame – been Paul’s lover. Like the Nivens, Paul belongs to England’s old money aristocracy, whereas Jane was orphaned at birth. With the house conveniently empty, they can finally meet in Paul’s bedroom for the first time. Today will be their last as lovers. It is also the day that will mark the beginning of Jane’s transformation as the story unfolds through the hours of clandestine passion.

Boring, don't bother. Waste of my time
The premise of this movie is quite appealing, but the movie itself is extremely slow paced, characters lack depth, the protagonist is unconvincing and the story is unremarkable. The only characters that spark any kind of interest are side characters, but unfortunately they also lack depth and are disregarded by the creators. The dialogue is also annoying and tries too hard to be poetic, which is easily noticed by the viewers. This movie makes you feel like you are waiting for something to happen, which spoiler alert, it never does. If you are looking for a captivating story of romance, don't bother watching this movie because you will not find it here. The two stars in the 2/10 rating is solely for the cinematography and costumes, which are quite good.

Slow, ponderous...what a waste of talent
The most exciting thing in this movie is a pork pie. A cameo from Glenda Jackson, bit parts from Firth and Coleman. An obvious plot with its denouement signposted at the beginning. A superflous accident that had no real bearing on the major character other than a little temporary sadness...she wouldn't have been human if she'd reacted otherwise. Then more misery heaped on a potentially redemptive character. None of this in either logical or chronological order. It was meaninglessness nicely acted and beautifully shot.
