Better than expected
Maddie Barker is going through a rough patch. Her car has been repossessed, meaning no income from Uber driving. A wealthy couple is looking to hire a young woman to date their introverted 19-year-old son to bring him out of his shell. In desperation, she applies.
Okay, and much better than expected. This looked like a very lightweight romantic-comedy but it amounts to more than that in reality. The romance/drama/plot side is fairly flimsy and predictable but the comedy is quite good. Rather than cutesy and/or silly the comedy is quite edgy and non-PG.
This edginess is helped by a very animated performance from Jennifer Lawrence. The character and dialogue is not what you'd expect from her, to the credit of her and the film.
Unfortunately the film does take itself too seriously towards the end and we have a rather trite ending. However it's quite entertaining for the remainder. - bryangphillips - 5 May 2024
WHAT did I just watch??
Did Jennifer Lawrence lose a bet or something? Did a mean/creative judge sentence her to do this movie? I'm truly stunned that an A-list actor would agree to be in such a bizarre and stupid picture.
I'm having lunch with a friend today and I actually think I'm going to recommend this movie because it's so weird that almost a conversation starter. Summarizing the plot would be both a spoiler and ridiculous to put into sentences. I'll summarize it by saying that a high-school graduate who spends his life in his room is going off to school a virgin mostly because his parents have infantilized him. To remedy the situation they act as pimps by putting an add in Craigslist for an "attractive, smart girl in her early twenties" to have sex with their darling boy.
I've never been particularly fond of Jennifer Lawrence, but I was surprised to learn that she's only 32. Granted, that's wildly too old for a "19yo" (this boy looks 16 at most. Unless he's been held back I can not understand how an American HS Senior could possibly be 19 and when you're cutting this close to age of consent it matters). If, as I suspect this boy is closer to 16 we're talking statutory rape. I also thought the jokes about the guy marrying his HS Spanish teacher were really odd.
The jokes about Gen-Z'ers being sheltered wimps were really funny. I'm father to a 13 year old so a lot of that behavior (not driving, seeing friends in person, going to parties, risk-taking of any kind) is stuff that I don't get and hope my child will avoid. I really think it's fertile ground for good comedy (this certainly isn't).
Jennifer Lawrence is really beautiful and I applaud her for doing nude scenes, but was this really the right one? Seriously, it's not just that is isn't tasteful (it's not), it's that nobody looks great squatting. I thought actors had agents for this stuff, but again maybe it was an angry judge that put her in this mess.
