The Dead Don't Hurt

The Dead Don't Hurt

In the 1860s, fiercely independent French-Canadian Vivienne Le Coudy embarks on a journey with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen, attempting to forge a life together in the dusty town of Elk Flats, Nevada. When Holger decides to go fight for the Union in the burgeoning Civil War, Vivienne must fend for herself, which isn't easy in a town controlled by a corrupt mayor.

The movie gives beauty and deep sadness
If it weren't for this important turn of events... the film would have turned out great. It is unbearable to watch such scenes and such people. As for the film itself, up to the third act it is a clever, mature and believable melodrama, and it should be noted that it is magnificent. There are not many events in the film, but everything looks real, as in life, without ostentatious exaggeration. I enjoyed the simplicity and sincerity of what was happening and the amazing acting. The film is sad, although the characters' relationships are filled with emotions, however, in my opinion, they remain undisclosed, as if there is not enough depth of feelings. The final sadness and the silent son ... the film simultaneously gives beauty and leaves a feeling of disappointment due to sadness and understatement.

    Confusing and unbelievable
A moderate amount of the film is spoken in French with no English subtitles, so you have to guess at the intent. There is a red scarf that travels through the scenes that you get to keep up with. The homestead is literally carved into a dusty cliff in Nevada, but we are to believe that long stem tea roses are grown in this dust. I loved the nod to flowers, but trust me, you won't be growing anything in parched dust. There are confusing jumps in the story that just never came together. I wondered if this was the work of really bad editing and the story was on the cutting room floor. I'm a great fan of Vigo and Vicky, went to see these movie on opening night. Historical movies are my jam, but this one left me hungry.
