    Struggled to hold my attention.
This film attempts to be something equivalent to the Marvel universe, with many soundbytes that tend to fall flat. The lead's tonal pacing and pitch does not engender the sense of an enthralling adventure. It has poor synchronicity in AV as it moves from scene to scene. The only fully believable character is the Tiefling and barbarian girl(who both have fantastic costume, makeup, and hair design). It is far too americanized to suspend reality and allow us to believe we are truly in a fantasy setting. The CGI is quite impression insofar as the art design and direction, however. The film isn't terrible, it just isn't the direction I would've went for introducing the D&D franchise to a new generation.

My favorite movie of 2023 that needs more love.
I was worried that this film was going to be bad, filled with nothing but political activism and "Girl Boss" themes and bad CGI. What I actually got was a fun and faithful love letter to everyone who plays Dungeons and Dragons. Throughout the whole film it really did feel like I was watching an entire D&D campaign play out on the screen. All the actors looked like they had a blast, even Hugh Grant seemed like he had a good time, even if this role isn't in his wheelhouse. Memorable characters with a star studded and talented cast combine with stunning locales, incredible special effects, funny jokes and a compelling plot that's anyone can enjoy. You don't have to play D&D to like this movie. It was a real shame that it had to come out during the worst time for any movie to come out, especially behind the juggernauts of Barbie and Oppenheimer. This film absolutely deserved summer blockbuster status.
