Encanto

The tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family—every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family's last hope.

    My favourite Disney antagonist
I expected a heartwarming Disney movie, but I was surprised when the movie introduced one of the most terrifying villains in fiction. I was so shocked that I decided to write my first ever IMDb review.

During the whole movie Abuela engages in activities such as child endangerment, child abuse, child neglect, brainwashing, leading a cult(her family) and attempted world domination using her magic candle and she got away with it.

One of the greatest manipulators in fiction cause nobody suspected her and nobody ever held her responsible for her actions, not even Bruno, her son which she abandoned for years, nor Mirabel, where Abuela convinced the whole family to neglect her.

If the magic hadn't died I'm sure Abuela would have conquered the world. Loved the movie.

Absolute Perfect Look Into the Human Experience
    Encanto

Encanto is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time when it comes to the analysis of one's importance in the world, whether between family, or a community as a whole. The film describes a magical event wherein each member of the Madrigal family is granted a special supernatural gift. These gifts are then used to improve and grow a community surrounding the home of the family.

These gifts serve as metaphor for both the individuality of a person, but a black and white definition of said individuality. While each member of the family has their own unique gift, these abilities are then used for only one purpose. At first glance, everyone appears to be happy with their ability to help their friends and neighbors, but when Mirabel Madrigal is given no specific gift, cracks in the facade, quite literally, begin to appear.

What happens next is an investigation as to why Mirabel's lack of a gift occurred and why the rest of the family starts to exhibit strange behaviors. Plus, we don't talk about Bruno.

I was blown away by the movie's subtlety as the picture became quite clear. It is important to remember that we are all made up of more than one definition. You aren't required to do one thing, in one way, to be considered important or special. Mirabel's journey brings forward that her specific gift is to be a model of such human nature.

The idea that one, and only one, aspect of your personality is all that matters hits hard, especially when this can lead to depression, or a lack of sense of self. Mental health awareness is important to support and listen to your family and community. The movie stands as that reminder.

Please, listen and realize that others are going through different experiences, and the perception that we have of others may need to be reevaluated through therapy and meditation. We all matter, and not just because we can do one amazing thing. Bravo to Disney for weaving such an in depth look into the human experience.
