Surface level entertaining that provides a fun watch.
Samaritan (2022) follows a young boy as he suspects that his neighbour is the supposedly dead heroic vigilante Samaritan. Despite its flaws, I did enjoy this film! It was cheesy, pretty average and easy to watch. However, it wasn't too original.

The cinematography was good, there was a lot of strong colour palettes and some really nice shots all throughout the film. Unfortunately, the visual effects were mainly pretty bad. The fight scenes often looked goofy, and in the climax the use of green screen was almost laughably bad and very distracting.

The score was mainly way too basic, and the sound design wasn't great either. There was an audio transition that went from a character screaming to a train honking, which made me laugh out loud; I don't think this is what the filmmakers intended! I reminded me of a simile transition in House of Gucci (2021), which was also incredibly goofy.

Although, the characters were mainly likeable and the performances were also pretty good! The main kid was a really good actor, Javon Walton has a lot of range as shown by this movie and Euphoria (2019-present). The friendship between Joe and Sam was sweet too. The dialogue was, for the most part, quite poor. But, I did find some lines pretty funny!

The film follows a basic structure and feels very safe in this regard. The pacing is consistent and it was surface-level entertaining that was at least fun to watch! It did take itself a bit too seriously at times though. The film also has a twist, which I genuinely didn't see coming and I loved it!
