TMAuthor23 - 4 June 2024 Worth Watching Usually when i rate a movie a 6 it's with the suggestion that you can watch it while doing something else. Not here, there are some hilarious scenes you'll miss if you look away. Especially the scenes with "Donut".
Equal parts black comedy, thriller and buddy action flick, it doesn't nail any of those vibes perfectly, but there are lots of good moments.
Brosnan proves effective at playing a compartmentalized killer, who loves to cook, appreciates those who've been good to him, and uses his experience to win as opposed to brawn.
Caan in his last role, carries enough weight that his scenes are anchored well, polished by Brosnan's interaction.
The primary villain is a little light. There's little sense of him actually killing our anti-hero; and his "number one" assassin is a little bland too.
Morena Baccarin is an interesting choice here, but she and Brosnan poke fun at their age difference and the ludicrousness of a possible walk off into the sunset.
The ending is never really in doubt, but the way they arrive at it, along with some bloodily humorous scenes, is novel and fun.
Recommended.
tayo-99892 - 10 April 2024 At last, a modern, strong, independent woman I can respect Unsurprisingly, Pierce Brosnan's eponymous Charlie Swift falls in love with Marcie Kramer, played by Morena Baccarin. Marcie is the kind of woman any man could fall in love with; she is smart, tough, and doesn't do histrionics; she simply gets with the program and enters problem-solving mode. The amazing and most attractive part of all this goodness is that she is so not a 'girl boss'. The scriptwriter (or scriptwriters) never once put her into a masculine mode. Yet, even when understandably frightened, she deals with baddies with bravery and intelligence. She has 'old time' moxie, the kind it took to walk out into the wilderness at a man's side and take whatever life handed out on the chin. I hope whoever wrote this character ends up as a Hollywood script doctor; his/her/their services are badly needed!
As for the film itself, er, nah. Had I not been so impressed with the female lead, I'd have given the movie just 4 stars. Look, I get it. The film meant to depict an old-fashioned, 'gentleman hoodlum' in an almost-noir crime caper, with some laid-back black humour oiling plot gears that might otherwise creak even louder. Yeah, I get it, but it didn't work.
For example, the chemistry between the two leads is dead. To be honest, it would have worked better without the shoed-in romance. Also, Brosnan came across like a late-80s Roger Moore James Bond. Way past 'past it'; rather, he looked all the way gone to hell and seeping out through the seams 'past it'. Finally, this magical black man kept popping up out of nowhere at the most incredibly opportune moments. I can imagine what Ryan George would have to say about that! Lol.
Verdict: If you don't want much from the movie and have nothing else on, you could do worse than watch this.
